Cancellation Watch: Good Omens Could Continue to a 3rd Season, Still No Word on Shadow and Bone or Wolf Pack

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Good Omens (Prime Video, Streaming 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): This show arrived in 2019 as a mini-series adapting the book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett then surprisingly got a second-season announcement two years later. That premiered on Amazon’s Prime Video at the end of July 2023 and wrapped up on somewhat of a cliffhanger. A third season has not been announced yet, but Gaiman already has plans for where the show could go. If viewership for the second season is strong, it is possible that Good Omens could continue for another year or so, but if Amazon does not greenlight a third season, Gaiman plans on continuing the story in print.

Shadow and Bone (Netflix, Completed 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): The second season of this show premiered in March 2023 and it performed well in viewership. It had a five-week run in the Netflix Top 10 averaging 32 million hours watched per week and it spent four weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings averaging 771 million minutes per week. But several months later Netflix still has not announced a third season. It sure seems like they would want this one back, but that company is also known for turning its back on some of its high-profile shows. I would say that a third season is still a good bet, but fans should make some noise on the social networks to help its cause.

Wolf Pack (Paramount+, Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This werewolf drama arrived on Paramount+ at the beginning of the year, and even though it did not show up in the Nielsen streaming rankings, it was one of the most “in-demand” shows at that time according to Parrot Analytics. The first season ended on a cliffhanger and series star Sarah Michelle Gellar has said concerning a second season that “we have a writers’ room open, and we’re preparing” and that “everybody wants season 2”. The fact that Paramount+ has remained silent about the show is a little bit concerning, though, especially considering the cost-cutting that streamer has been going. And shows like this one could get kicked to the curb as a retaliation against the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to improve Wolf Pack‘s chances of returning for a second year.

The Dragon Prince (Netflix, Streaming 5th Season, Renewed): The fifth season of this show premiered on Netflix last month with little in the way of promotion and it has not made it into that streamer’s Top 10 yet. But this animated fantasy has already been renewed through its seventh season which will give the creative team the opportunity to tell the full story they have planned and wrap up the show’s storylines.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

As I have been finalizing the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the now completed 2022-23 season I discovered that I never moved the Paramount+ supernatural dramedy School Spirits to the renewed column. I have corrected that and that brings the current score dead even at 40 renewed sci fi and fantasy shows (46% of shows tracked) vs. 40 cancelled and ending shows (46%). Below are the season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 87
Cancelled 20 23.0%
Ending 20 23.0% 46.0%
Renewed 40 46.0%
On the Bubble 0 0.0%
Renewal Possible 7 8.0%
Mini-Series 3
