The Walking Dead Spin-Offs Dead City and Daryl Dixon Get Second Season Renewals

Announced at San Diego Comic Con yesterday, The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will both be returning for a second season. The former series is currently airing its inaugural season and has had decent ratings for a basic cable entry. That show was designated as a limited series, but co-star Laura Cohen had previously indicated that it could go for multiple seasons. Daryl Dixon is set to premiere on September 10th, and apparently AMC feels strong enough about that one (it centers around one of the most popular characters from the franchise) that they decided to give it the second season nod in advance. Like Dead City, the first season of that one will likely run six episodes with the second season of both probably going longer.

In addition, the Rick and Michonne spin-off series has received the official title The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. That one is expected to premiere in 2024. Not mentioned was Tales of the Walking Dead which premiered almost a year ago, but AMC has remained silent on its fate. Scott Gimple had indicated that he would like to return to the series at some point, but that the focus is currently on the other spin-off shows. With nothing happening on Tales, I am going to assume that one is ended for now.

With the renewal for Dead City and Tales of the Walking Dead getting shifted to the ending column, that brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season to 39 renewed sci fi and fantasy shows (43% of shows tracked) vs 37 cancelled and ending (41%). You can see the full list of shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

In The Walking Dead: Dead City, Maggie’s son Herschel is kidnapped and she enlists the help of Negan to rescue him, which takes them to the zombie-infested city of Manhattan. It stars Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zeljko Ivanek, Gaius Charles, and Mahina Napoleon.

The Walking Dead: Daryll Dixon follows Daryl who sets out to find Rick Grimes but somehow gets carried across the ocean to France. He journeys across that country encountering the survivors there while also trying to find a way back home. It stars Norman Reedus, Clémence Poésy, Adam Nagaitis, Anne Charrier, and Eriq Ebouaney.
