Apple TV+ has officially announced the second season renewal of its sci fi series Silo. I had previously moved that one to renewal status, though, because the second season was listed in Production Weekly and that tends to be a reliable source. The show has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings Top 10 yet, but according to Deadline it debuted as the Number 1 drama in the history of Apple TV+. It currently holds an 87% Fresh Rating and 87% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. Production Weekly announced the start of the second season before the writers’ strike, so it is possible that at least some scripts were completed before the labor action started. But it is unclear at this point how much the strike will impact production. Expect the second season to arrive Spring or Summer 2024 at the earliest.
Also renewed this week was Max’s adult-animated Scooby Doo spin-off Velma. That second season announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise because the show was not well-received in its first season. It currently holds only a 40% Tomatometer rating and a 7% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it did not make it into the Nielsen streaming rankings during its first season run. Fans of The Winchesters and Gotham Knights–both also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery–would likely argue the streamer would be better off picking up one or both of those beloved shows (which ended in the Top 5 of our season-end poll), but apparently Max execs decided to stick with Velma. The second season will likely be impacted by the writers’ strike and will probably arrive at some point in 2024.
With these renewals, that brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score to 37 renewed sci fi and fantasy shows so far this season (42% of shows tracked) and 36 cancelled and ending (41%). Silo focuses on the final ten-thousand people alive on Earth who are living in a mile-deep home that protects them from the toxic and deadly world outside. But nobody knows the truth of why the silo was built and those who seek answers face deadly consequences. It stars Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, Common, Tim Robbins, and Harriet Walter and it is based on the Wool series of novels by author Hugh Howey.
Velma takes place in an alternate universe from the Scooby Doo cartoons and focuses on the title character as she tries to learn the truth about the disappearance of her mother as well as several murders of local teenage girls. The voice cast includes Mindy Kaling, Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, and Constance Wu.
