The Netflix Red Queen has issued her “Off With Their Heads!” verdict once again, and Lockwood & Co. is the latest show to fall at that streamer. The news does not come as a huge surprise, though, as that supernatural drama did not spend enough time in the Top 10 to satisfy the completion rate that Netflix execs are looking for, and I have had it On the Bubble for some time. It had a three-week run in the charts, hitting the Number 1 slot in its second week, but we have seen other shows like Warrior Nun, The Midnight Club, and The Imperfects cancelled after spending the same amount of time in the charts. Netflix measures how many viewers complete the current season, and apparently that three-week run does not correlate well to a high completion rate.
The show did get very high marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 92% Fresh Rating and 94% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. And the show has developed somewhat of a following, so fans will likely make a Call to Action to try and get it shifted to another venue (it is currently in the Top 5 in our season-end poll). However, Netflix almost certainly has the rights to the property shored up for at least two seasons, so that could make it difficult for the show to make a move to a new home, especially considering the young age of the cast.
This cancellation brings the score for the current season to 32 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy shows (39% of shows tracked) vs. 32 renewed (39%). You can see the detailed list of shows from the current season and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
Lockwood & Co. takes place in an alternate version of present-day Britain threatened by deadly ghosts. It follows three teens who are among the young people recruited to hunt the supernatural beings that cannot be seen by adults. It stars Ivanno Jeremiah, Jack Bandeira, Rhianna Dorris, and Paddy Holland and it is based on the book series by Jonathan Stroud.
