Fans of the British historical fantasy Britannia will be left hanging as Sky has elected to cancel the show after three seasons, leaving its story unresolved. That show has proven popular in its home country of Britain, but it is expensive to produce and apparently its network was unwilling to keep it going for another season. Britannia was originally available for viewing in the U.S. on Amazon’s Prime Video, and that streamer contributed to the production costs. But Amazon bowed out after the first season and EPIX (now MGM+) became the streaming partner in the States starting with its second year (all three seasons are available there, and the first two are still on Prime Video). I have not seen any viewership numbers for the show, but it currently holds a 92% Fresh Rating and 77% Audience score across three seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. There is no word at this point on whether it will be shopped around to other venues, and while the show did not garner much attention in the U.S., British fans may be up to the task of making some noise to get the show at least one more season to resolve its storylines. For now, it is yet another casualty of the Peak TV crunch, leaving audiences increasingly disillusioned with the television industry that fails to support its own programming.
This show counts back to the 2021-22 season because the last time it aired was Fall 2021. That adds one more cancellation to last year’s numbers bringing the total cancelled and ending shows to 48 ((44% of shows tracked) vs. 52 renewed (48%). Britannia follows General Aulus Plautius (played by The Walking Dead‘s David Morrissey) as he leads a Roman invasion of Britain, allegedly in the interest of the Empire though he has his own agenda. The people of Britain prove to be formidable foes but may have to rely on the prophecy that one young woman will lead them to victory. It stars David Morrissey, Kelly Reilly, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Mackenzie Crook, Barry Ward, and Eleanor Worthington Cox.
