Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, and recently cancelled/ended shows from the current season at our Cancellation Watch Page.
The Orville (Hulu)
(3rd Season Ended, Renewal Possible): There has been no word on a fourth season of The Orville since it wrapped up its third season in Summer 2022. But in a recent interview, Chad L. Coleman (who plays Klyden) had this to say:
We think it’s gonna happen, but it’s still up in the air. There’s so much going on with all of these studios that it’s just like, ‘Well, we gotta settle this thing first, then we can really decide on that thing.’ A bunch of that is going on. We hope so. Seth has an amazing relationship with Dana [Walden] and with Disney, who’s running it now. And they said they’ve had promising meetings, so we’ll see.
The show did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its third season run or when it became available on Disney+. But apparently there is still a chance for a fourth season and fans should definitely make some noise on the social networks to support it.
Ms. Marvel (Disney+)
(1st Season Ended, Ended): This show wrapped up its first season in Summer 2022 and there has been no word on a second year since then. It wrapped up its storylines for the most part and appeared to be setting up the appearance of Ms. Marvel in the coming Marvels movie (due out in Summer 2023), but cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin has talked about where a second season could go. That could happen at some point if it fits into the MCU calendar, but at this point I am going to consider it to have the mini-series designation like Hawkeye and Moon Knight and to be ended for now.
The Mandalorian (Disney+)
(Streaming 3rd Season, Renewal Likely): According to Samba TV, the third season debut was down from the second season, drawing the attention of 1.5 million households vs. over two million last year. That may be demonstrating some franchise fatigue, but I don’t believe this one is in danger of getting cancelled after its third season even though the streamers have been trimming back their originals lately. According to Jon Favreau, the fourth season is already written, and even though the show has not been officially renewed, I still expect that to happen. Whether it will continue beyond that remains to be seen.
Shining Girls (Apple TV+)
(1st Season Ended, Ended): It has been eleven months since this show wrapped up its first season and there has been no word on it continuing. It completed the story of the novel, but series star Elisabeth Moss said in an interview that “there’s more story to tell”. Her other series The Handmaid’s Tale followed a similar path, with the first season covering the novel and the story continuing on through an additional five seasons (its upcoming sixth will be its last). But it does not appear that Shining Girls will be doing the same, and for now I am considering it to have ended.
Fantasy Island (FOX)
(Airing 2nd Season, On the Bubble): This show is currently the second lowest-rated drama on FOX and its status is uncertain. The network seems to be using it as schedule spackle as its second season premiere was moved multiple times and it rarely airs more than two new episodes in a row before getting preempted or running a repeat. Its inclusive storytelling also does not fit well with the arch-conservative nature of the network, so the show is certainly out of place. It is a relatively inexpensive series to produce, so that works in its favor according to Deadline, with the possibility it could move back to airing during the Summer time frame. But I consider the show very much On the Bubble and it could use some support from its fans.
