Status Updates: She-Hulk, The Winchesters, Lockwood & Co., and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, and recently cancelled/ended shows from the current season at our Cancellation Watch Page.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (Disney+)

(1st Season Ended, On the Bubble): This show wrapped up its first season in October 2022 and there has still been no word on its fate. It did make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for seven of the nine weeks it was releasing new episodes, though it was mostly in the lower rungs of the Top 10. Disney has announced cost-cutting measures corporate-wide and has cancelled several of its originals recently including Willow (more on that at this link).  The She-Hulk series definitely left open the possibility that it could continue to a second season, but there is also a chance that it could get retro-fitted to a mini-series designation (the same may be true of Ms. Marvel).  The character will almost certainly return at some point in the MCU, but whether she will continue to lead her own series remains to be seen.

The Winchesters (CW)

(1st Season Ended, On the Bubble): This show has wrapped up its first season, and its chances of returning for a second year are very much in doubt at this point. Showrunner Robbie Thompson has said that “I’ve spoken a lot with our partners at Warner Bros. because, obviously, we’re not sure what’s happening”. He also suggested that The Winchesters could move to a new venue, possibly HBO Max or even Netflix seeing as Supernatural is currently streaming at the latter venue. It seems unlikely that it will return to The CW under their new management despite the fact that it is one of the better-rated shows on that network. Fans should definitely make some noise to support it in order to give the show a chance to continue on some platform.

Lockwood & Co. (Netflix)

(1st Season Ended, On the Bubble): This show dropped out of the Nielsen rankings after three weeks which is the same amount of time it spent on the Netflix charts. It is yet another supernatural drama from that streamer that arrived with very little promotion and did well in initial viewership but may not have achieved the completion rate that execs at that network want to see. Other Netflix entries like The Midnight Club, The Imperfects, and Warrior Nun had similar runs in the charts (and a similar lack of promotion) and all of those were cancelled. Fans of Lockwood & Co. should certainly make a push on the social networks to support the show and give it at least a chance of surviving to a second season.

Kung Fu (CW)

(3rd Season Ended, On the Bubble): This is another CW entry that is looking at an uncertain fate after wrapping up its current season. It has three seasons under its belt, but all of those were shortened runs so it is not close enough to the 80-plus episode mark that makes it more attractive to the syndication market (where shows really turn a profit). The ratings for this one were down notably from its second season and I have not seen much effort from fans to try and lobby for a fourth year. At this point, it looks like it could be yet another casualty of The CW changing ownership and will likely join other truncated shows like Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, and Legacies.

Wolf Pack (Paramount+)

(1st Season Ended, Renewal Possible): This show has completed its first season and is currently awaiting word on a second year renewal. Paramount+ is not tracked by Nielsen yet, so I have seen no viewership stats for the show. It has not been well-received by critics so far, currently holding only showing a 42% score on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes. But viewers seem to like it as it has an 85% Audience Score. Fans should probably start making some noise to support the show in order to improve its chances of getting a second season.

  1. Hi,

“The character [Ms. Marvel] will almost certainly return at some point in the MCU, but whether she will continue to lead her own series remains to be seen.”

The Ms. Marvel character is already set to appear in the movie “The Marvels” which is to be released this November 2023. The series, I feel, was intended as at introduction/set-up for her character. I don’t know if a second season was ever really considered.
(In the final episode of the series, the point was stressed that the character was actually a mutant, one of the first mentions of mutants in the MCU, so she could later be brought into any X-Men development.)
Also appearing in that movie will be the character of Monica Rambeau as Photon. She was introduced back in the 2021 “WandaVision” series.
Marvel has already released a poster for “The Marvels” (which will also, of course, included Captain Marvel):
