Coming as no surprise, the international treasure hunt series Blood & Treasure has been cancelled after two seasons and will not continue for a third year. That Indiana Jones meets National Treasure show premiered on CBS back in 2019 as a Summer entry and pulled decent ratings in its first year. It was renewed for a second season but was shifted over to the Paramount+ streaming service (then known as CBS All Access). It then went on a three-year hiatus because its international shooting schedule made it difficult to complete the second season during the COVID-related production shutdowns. The show finally returned in Summer 2022, but the prospects of a third season seemed grim because the cast and crew had been released from their contracts and series star Matt Barr had moved on to the CW show Walker: Independence. Series co-creator Matthew Federman had tweeted at that time:
I don’t know what the future holds but I’m very proud of what we got to do with this show, shooting our little action/adventure on four continents and through a pandemic. Thanks to our partners at CBS who trusted us to pull it off and our amazing writers, cast, crew and staff. It was very much the adventure of a lifetime. And thanks to everyone who watched and spread the word.
Blood & Treasure was an expensive show to produce due to its international locations, and apparently the viewership numbers on Paramount+ did not justify any attempt to bring the principals back together for a third year. The show did get the chance to wrap up most of its storylines, though it left open the possibility of a continuation into further adventures. Whether a fan attempt to save the show will follow remains to be seen, but it will be an uphill battle seeing as all involved have dispersed as well as the high cost of the show.
The second year premiered in July of 2022, so it counts as part of the 2021-22 season. That shifts the Cancellation/Renewal Score for that season to 47 cancelled/ending shows (43% of shows tracked) vs 52 renewed (48%). Blood & Treasure follows an antiquities expert who teams up with a notorious art thief in order to catch a terrorist who uses stolen treasure to fund his actions. In the process, they find themselves in the midst of a two thousand year old battle for the cradle of civilization. It stars Matt Barr, Sofia Pernas, James Callis, Katia Winter, and Michael James Shaw.
