Amazon’s sci fi series The Peripheral will be continuing to a second season on Prime Video. That show debuted in October 2022 but did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 during its eight-episode first-season run. It did receive decent marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 77% Fresh Rating and and 86% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. I figured that it had a good chance at getting a second season, despite not scoring high viewership numbers, because this is the first series from high-profile producers Christopher Nolan and Lisa Joy, and Amazon probably wanted to give the show a chance to find an audience (something that it becoming rare with the streaming services lately). In addition, Production Weekly had already indicated that production on the second season had begun. But this is a fairly expensive show, so if viewership does not grow in its second year, it might find itself in trouble. Considering the elaborate production for the series, the second season likely will not arrive until late 2023 or early 2024.
This notches up one more renewal for the current season and brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score to 23 Renewed shows (35% of shows tracked) vs. 25 Cancelled/Ending (38%). You can keep up with the Cancellation/Renewal Score through the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
The Peripheral takes place in the near future and focuses on an expert VR Gamer who tries out a new interface only to find out that it transfers her consciousness to a future, post-apocalyptic world.
