CBS Has Renewed Ghosts for a Third Season (Expect a Fourth as Well)

Coming as no surprise, CBS has given its supernatural comedy Ghosts a third season renewal. That show has been one of the top-performing sitcoms across all of the broadcast networks this season, and in the most recent Scorecard I put out, it ranked Number 23 across all shows on the broadcast nets. It has also achieved a rare feat these days by growing its audience year-over-year, though the fact that its timeslot was changed to follow directly after Young Sheldon this season has helped with that. It is currently the Number 1 comedy streaming on Paramount+ where new episodes are available the day after broadcast (the first season is streaming there as well). I moved the show to Renewal Likely status early in the season and have been saying for some time that a third season was pretty much a sure thing.

But not only is Ghosts coming back for another year, it is also pretty much guaranteed a fourth season at this point as it is now in the syndication stretch. The first season of the show had eighteen episodes in a COVID-shortened year and the current season will likely run for twenty-two eps. Assuming the same order for a third and fourth season, that will get the show to 84 total which is close enough to the 88-episode threshold prefered by the syndication market (where shows really turn a profit). Not many shows have twenty-plus episode seasons any more, but it is still financially doable for sitcoms, and they happen to be attractive syndication pickups. So at this point, consider Ghosts to be a pretty safe bet to stick around through at least a fourth season if not more.

Ghosts follows New Yorkers Samantha and Jay who inherit a house in the country only to find that it is falling apart and inhabited by the ghosts who previously died there. Samantha is able to see and communicate with the ghosts because she previously had a near-death experience. It stars Rose McIver, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Brandon Scott Jones, Richie Moriarty, Asher Grodman and it is based on the British series of the same name.
