Wednesday Has Been Renewed by Netflix for a Second Season

Coming as not much of a surprise, Netflix has renewed its Addams’ Family reboot series Wednesday for a second season. That show has spent six straight weeks at Number 1 in the Netflix Top 10 so far and three weeks at Number 1 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings (the latter chart is on a three-week delay). The show has also become the third most-watched original series on Netflix behind Stranger Things Season 4 and Squid Game. The renewal seemed like the obvious next step, but Netflix remained silent for several weeks while cancelling other shows that were performing well in viewership metrics. There were even rumors that the show would move over to Prime Video (that streamer originally passed on it) because Wednesday comes from MGM and Amazon now owns that studio. But all worries about cancellation or a change in platform have passed now that the streamer has issued an official renewal.

Showrunner Alfred Gough had the following to say about the upcoming second season:

We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward. The school was closed when they left, which gave us the most possibilities for season two, and I think that’s something that we’re excited to explore. For us, the show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that. The fact that they really connected with audiences, it has been really gratifying. So, we’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So it’s like now, we do that. Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well, which now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve?

There is no word at this point on how much involvement Tim Burton will have with the series going forward. He was executive producer for the first season and directed the first four episodes.  Gough and Miles Millar are set to remain onboard as showrunners and the second season will likely debut late 2023 or early 2024.

Wednesday follows Wednesday Adams as she attends Nevermore Academy and tries to master her emerging psychic ability. While there, she becomes involved with investigating a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town. It stars Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, and Christina Ricci.
