The Journey Ends for 1899 as Netflix Cancels It After One Season

The historical mystery series 1899 has been cancelled by Netflix after one season according to the show’s creators. It is only the second day of the new year and already the streamer is carrying on with its trend of cancelling shows, something it did far too often in 2022. The following post announcing the show’s demise was put on Instagram by co-creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese earlier today:

The show has spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 so far and has risen as high as Number 2 with 84 million hours viewed in its best week.  And the only reason it never hit Number 1 is because it competed with the mega-viewership from hit series Wednesday each week. It also debuted at Number 2 in the Nielsen Streaming rankings and pulled in over one billion minutes of viewing that week. With numbers that high, you have to ask what exactly Netflix wants from a show for it count as a success and you also have to wonder if it is worth investing time in any of the streamer’s originals seeing as they have a high likelihood of getting cut short.  1899–which comes from the makers of Dark–has received good buzz and currently holds a 76% Fresh Rating and 74% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. The plan was for the show to run three seasons just like Dark, but now the story will be left with no resolution.

Over the past few months, Netflix has cancelled fan-favorites like Warrior Nun and Fate: The Winx Saga and has generated some negative press for its lack of commitment to its originals. Fans of those shows are lobbying for them to move to a different venue where they could continue for at least one more season if not more, but it is unlikely that the streamer will agree to free up the rights to properties. Netflix has developed a reputation as a company that is quick to cancel its shows, and that could really take its toll this year as the Peak TV bubble seems to be on the verge of busting.

1899 follows a group of immigrants traveling on a steamship from London to New York whose journey is mysteriously interrupted when they happen upon another vessel abandoned and adrift on the open sea. It stars Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, José Pimentão, and Isabella Wei.

  1. A horrible decision by Netflix! I also liked Warrior Nun and Fate: The Winx Saga but 1899 was my absolute favorite! At least Netflix has not cancelled The Witcher yet.
