Cancellation Watch: The Nevers Cancelled by HBO, Quantum Leap Gets Renewed, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and streaming viewership for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as status updates and breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates:

HBO has cancelled its steampunk series The Nevers midway through its first season. That show debuted in May 2021 and aired its first six episodes before going on extended hiatus due to COVID-related production shutdowns. The premiere of the second half of its first season (which has been completed) kept getting delayed, and now it is unclear when that will air. The ratings for the show were decent but not spectacular, but apparently HBO decided not to give it a chance to build up its audience with the remaining episodes. It went through some behind-the-scenes shakeups when series creator Joss Whedon backed away from the production amidst harassment allegations. Philippa Goslett stepped in as showrunner for the final six episodes.  In addition, the cast and crew had been released from their contracts, so the cancellation did not come as a huge surprise.  You can vote for this show and more in our Fall 2022 Save My Show poll.

Not only has The Nevers been cancelled, but it will be pulled from HBO Max along with Westworld. The latter series was cancelled by HBO in November 2022 after four seasons, and both will be booted from the streaming service as cost-cutting measures (Warner Bros. Discovery will not have pay residuals on the encore runs). It is unclear where they will be available and when the final six episodes of The Nevers will premiere, but they could wind up on an ad-supported FAST channel space.

In renewal news, NBC has given the greenlight to a second season of its revival series Quantum Leap. That show is currently on its Winter hiatus and it pulled decent ratings during its Fall run. The same-day numbers were not too high, but it did see notable gains from delayed viewing. And according to the network, it is their best launch on the Peacock streaming service where episodes are available the day after broadcast. The show will be returning from hiatus on January 2nd.

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Wednesday of last week, Syfy’s Reginald the Vampire improved to a 0.06 rating with 241K total viewers for its season finale, and it did that without a lead-in from Chucky. With its numbers improving two weeks in a row as its first season ended, that might give some hope for a second-season renewal, and fans should definitely take this as an opportunity to start lobbying for that on the social networks.  You can vote for this one and more in our Fall 2022 Save My Show poll.

Over on The CW on Wednesday, Stargirl slipped to a 0.05 rating with 456K total viewers for its series finale. On Tuesday, The CW’s The Winchesters slipped to a 0.06 rating with 408K totaal viewers for its Fall finale. On Thursday, Ghosts had a 0.56 rating with 6.4 million total viewers for its Fall finale.
