Cancellation Watch: Avenue 5 Is Likely to Get Cancelled, Reginald the Vampire Gets a Bump in the Ratings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Ratings results and streaming viewership for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as status updates and breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates:

The ratings results from the past week are below, but since there will not be much ratings news through December–with most shows having wrapped up their seasons or going on hiatus–I will be taking a look at shows that are trending toward renewal or cancellation over the next few weeks. Sadly, there are notably more shows that are verging on cancellation or just uncertain than those leaning toward renewal.  The Bubble shows could certainly use a Call to Action from fans on the social networks to bring them more attention. You can see the status of all the currently airing, returning, and upcoming shows at our Cancellation Watch page.

Recent Cancellations:

The Midnight Club (Netflix): This is yet another Netflix series that spent some time on the charts, but apparently not enough to satisfy the execs at the streaming service. There is a slight chance that it could follow its creators over to Amazon, but that will require fans making a lot of noise on the social networks. More on the cancellation at this link.

Moonhaven (AMC+): This show was renewed, then it wasn’t as AMC is the latest entertainment company to go through major shakeups. It is possible that this one could shift to another venue, and fans should show their support on the social networks to help in those efforts. More on the cancellation at this link.

Trending Toward Cancellation:

Avenue 5 (HBO, Cancellation Likely): This space comedy was pretty much DOA when its second season premiered this Fall. It had an extended hiatus between seasons and the contracts for the cast and crew were allowed to lapse. The show’s creator is still holding out hope for a third season, but that seems unlikely at this point.

Let the Right One In (Showtime, On the Bubble): This vampire drama has barely registered in the ratings in its first season, pulling in lower numbers than The Man Who Fell to Earth which was cancelled by Showtime earlier this year.  There is a chance that international partnerships/financing could keep it afloat, but more likely this will be another one-and-done entry from the premium cable service.

Russian Doll (Netflix, On the Bubble): There has been no word on this time-bending series since its second season premiered in April, and its viewership numbers were not too strong.  The show has received some acclaim, but Netflix quickly dispenses with its originals these days if they are not topping the charts.

Trending Toward Renewal:

Ghosts (CBS, Renewal Likely): The second season of this supernatural sitcom is one of the top-rated comedies at CBS and across all of the broadcast networks this Fall.  I would expect it to stick around for at least a couple more years.

Wednesday (Netflix, Renewal Likely): It is always difficult to tell which originals will get cut down by the Netflix Red Queen’s “Off With Their Heads!” verdict, but when a show sets viewership records in its first week of release, it better be considered a sure-thing for renewal.  If not, the ghoulies from the Addams’ Family may be paying a visit to the Netflix execs!

Linear Ratings Results of Interest:

On Wednesday last week, Syfy’s Reginald the Vampire improved to a 0.05 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 158K total viewers. Those are the show’s best numbers since its premiere, but that bump is not enough to move it from Bubble status.

Over on The CW, both Stargirl and Kung Fu had a 0.06 rating as the latter series wrapped up its Fall run and the former heads into its series finale.  On Sunday, Showtime’s Let the Right In slipped to a 0.01 rating with 109K total viewers for its second to last Season 1 episode.

  1. Have seen a couple of those: Moonhaven was good, different, but in the end I won’t mind if it doesn’t get picked up… 5 episodes into The Midnight Club, and it’s actually pretty good, so the Netflix-vs-Amazon situation is kind of a bummer… Avenue 5 wasn’t funny at all, so good riddance… Let The Right One In was fantastic, and it would be a shame if it gets canceled.
