Coming as no surprise, the supernatural-tinged revival of the famous super-sleuth Nancy Drew will be coming to an end with its fourth season on The CW. I was actually amazed that one received a fourth year renewal this past season considering it is one of the network’s lowest-rated shows and The CW was cleaning house in preparation for new ownership taking over. It does fit in a little bit better with the “wholesome” programming focus of new owners Nextar Media, but a fourth year will still have it well short of the episode count preferred for a syndication run since its prior seasons were below the typical 22-episode count. This does give the show the opportunity to wrap up its storylines, but fans of cancelled Legends of Tomorrow, Legacies, Charmed, and more would have certainly liked to see their shows get a final season as well (and they lobbied heavily for it). It was actually standard practice for The CW to announce the final season in advance prior to the sale. But the shows mentioned above along with cancelled Batwoman and Roswell, New Mexico had more LGBT+ representation, and those likely did not sit well with the new owners. The final season of Nancy Drew will premiere at Mid-Season.
Nancy Drew follows the eighteen-year-old title character with a penchant for solving mysteries who puts off going to college in order to investigate some strange doings in her town that appear to have supernatural origins. It stars Kennedy McMann, Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Tunji Kasim, and Alex Saxon and it is based on the YA series of books that has put out 175 novels. It is not linked to the Hardy Boys series (based on books from the same publisher) currently heading into its third and final season on Hulu.
