But something goes wrong and he finds himself leaping into the bodies of other people where he must fix historical inaccuracies while also trying to find a way to get back to his own time and his own body.

Aired: Syndication, 1989-1993, 5 Seasons Totaling 97 Episodes

Created By: Donald P. Bellisario

Starring: Scott Bakula, Dean Stockwell

Why Watch It?

This show appeared on NBC’s schedule at the end of the eighties and built up a notable following over its five-year run. Focusing primarily on Sam Beckett (Bakula) along with his holographic helper Al (Stockwell), the series delivered stand-alone, character-based stories that could be fun at times and that also carried a bit of social commentary. And of course, the interactions between Sam and Al carried the show along as the two travelers developed a strong bond. Quantum Leap was never a ratings hit, but it did well enough to stick around for five seasons despite the fact that the network kicked it around the schedule on a regular basis. It has since become a cult-favorite and definitely merits consideration as a classic sci fi TV series (you can read more about the show at this link).

All five seasons are currently available for streaming on NBC’s Peacock service.  That is a subscription-based service that carries current and past NBC shows as well as offerings from other networks under the NBCUniversal umbrella such as Syfy and USA.  The Premium plan which includes ads is usually $4.99 per month but they are currently running a special for $1.99 per month if you sign up for a full year (this offer could expire at any time).  They also have the Plus plan which is $9.99 per month with no ads (read more about the service at this link).  New episodes of the revival series will be streaming next day on Peacock after the show has its Fall debut (you can read more about that one at this link).  All five seasons of the original series are also available to stream for free (with ads) on The Roku Channel. That is a free service that has quite a number of past sci fi shows in its catalog.
