The Netflix Red Queen has issued another “Off With Their Heads!” verdict, and the live-action Resident Evil series is the latest to fall. That show has been cancelled after one season, but in this case, it might actually make some sense. That series premiered in the Netflix Top 10 at Number 2 with 72.7 million hours viewed, but it slipped back out after two more weeks and declining viewership. It spent only two weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for originals and topped out 858 million minutes viewed. The show also found little favor from critics or viewers, posting only a 55% Tomatometer average and a paltry 27% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the metrics that Netflix execs pay close attention to is whether viewers finish watching a series, and with such low audience numbers, it’s likely many people did not stick it out through all eight episodes. Since Resident Evil was an expensive show to make, the underperforming viewing numbers and negative feedback likely convinced Netflix to pass on a second season and move on to the next project. The streamer previously released the animated series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, but that appears to have been intended as a mini-series and did not continue into a second season. It is likely that Netflix is done with the franchise for now.
Resident Evil takes place in a near-future post-apocalyptic setting and follows Jade Wesker who must fight for survival in a world overrun by blood-thirsty, infected creatures. It stars Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, Paola Núñez, and Lance Reddick and it is based on the video game franchise by Capcom.
