Coming as no surprise, Netflix has given a fourth season renewal to its superhero drama The Umbrella Academy. Also coming as no surprise, they have announced that as the show’s final season. The third year was released in June and spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10, rising as high as Number 1 with 124 million hours watched for that week. It has also appeared in the Nielsen Top 10 for originals, spending five weeks there so far and topping out at Number 1 with 2.4 billion minutes viewed. Despite the high viewership, Netflix typically caps off its originals by their fourth year, and I have been saying for a while that The Umbrella Academy could end after one more season. The streaming services base the success of a show on the new subscriptions it brings, and those numbers tend to taper off in later seasons unless it is an event series like Netflix’s Stranger Things (which will be getting a fifth and final season). For that reason, we have been seeing streaming originals–particularly the Netflix entries–wrapping up by their third or fourth year, often with the final season announced in advance (if they don’t get cut down too soon by the streamer).
Showrunner Steve Blackman had the following to say about the final season renewal:
I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago. But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.
The fourth season will likely premiere at some point in 2023, and Blackman has already set his next two projects at Netflix (more on that at this link).
The Umbrella Academy follows a group of sibling superheroes who come back together after going their own ways to solve their father’s death. They then learn that they must work together to avert an impending apocalypse. It stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher and it is based on the comic book series of the same name created by Gerard Way.
The 2021-22 season has ended but a whole new season is on the way with more cancellations and renewals.
