Two sci fi/fantasy shows received renewal announcements yesterday, neither of which comes as a big surprise. The first announcement was for Syfy’s alien dramedy Resident Alien which will be returning for a third season. That show has pulled good ratings for a basic cable scripted series and counts as one of the Top 15 most-watched cable shows for the 2021-22 season. It has also received good buzz among critics and fans, currently holding a 94% Fresh Rating and 74% audience score across its first two seasons according to Rotten Tomatoes. The first half of its second season aired earlier this year and the show will resume with new episodes on August 10th. The San Diego Comic-Con panel for the show will be on Saturday.
Resident Alien follows an extraterrestrial being who crashlands on Earth and takes over the identity of a doctor named Harry and he must carry out his mission to kill all humans on the planet. It stars Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, and Levi Fiehler and it is based on the comic book of the same name created by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.
The second renewal was for Amazon’s epic fantasy The Wheel of Time which will be continuing into a third season as announced at Comic-Con. The first season of that show premiered in November 2021 and spent eight straight weeks in the Nielsen streaming Top 10, rising as high as Number 1 with 1.2 million minutes viewed that week. The second season has not received a premiere date, but it will likely arrive later this year or early 2023. The early renewal for a third year allows for production to get started so that there is less of a wait between seasons. It will be based on the fourth book in the series The Shadow Rising.
The Wheel of Time follows the channeler/sorceress Moraine who is seeking the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful channeller who can either save the world from the evil known as the Dark One or become an ally with that force. She finds five young people from a small river village who appear to have some connection to the Dragon’s reincarnation and must help them find their true purpose. It stars Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, and Barney Harris, and it is based on the book series by Robert Jordan.
The 2021-22 regular season has ended, but there are still quite a number of shows waiting for word on their fate (more on that at this link) plus several Summer entries.
