Cancellation Watch: Stranger Things Sets Viewership Record, The Umbrella Academy Joins Netflix Top 10, and More

Nielsen Streaming Top 10

Nielsen never did post numbers for the week May 23rd to 29th, but apparently that was because they were recalibrating to include HBO Max in their tallies.  The numbers below are for the week of May 30th to June 5th with no prior week comparison.

Netflix’s Stranger Things was in the second week of its Season 4 release and set a Nielsen record with a whopping 7.2 billion minutes of viewing (that combines viewership for all four seasons).  Only two other shows have passed 5 billion minutes of viewing in a week, the non-genre entries Tiger King and Ozark.  Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi was also in its second week of release and it was at the Number 3 slot with 958 minutes of viewing.  That is considered a mini-series, but there is a chance that a second season could follow at some point.  Amazon’s The Boys had its third season premiere that week and bowed at the Number 4 slot with 949 million minutes of viewing.  And Night Sky, also from Amazon, remained in the charts for a third week, placing at Number 8 with 242 million minutes of viewing.

The Orville had its third season premiere that week on Hulu but did not make it into the Nielsen Top 10 for originals.  Only one episode of the third season would have been available for viewing, but the prior two seasons would have been included in the tally as well.  We will see if it makes it into the charts in the coming weeks, and if not that could doom its chances for a fourth season.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the streaming charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):

Netflix Top 10:

After four weeks at the top of the Netflix charts, Stranger Things ceded the Number 1 slot to The Umbrella Academy for the week of June 20th to 26th.  The superhero show released its third season that week and pulled in 125 million hours of viewing, and it could be on track for a fourth season renewal.  All four seasons of Stranger Things continued their reign on the chart, though, as they took up slots two through five, totaling over 175 million hours of viewing.  The vampire drama First Kill slipped to Number 9 with 19 million hours viewed, but it could be on track for a second season renewal.  Following are all the sci fi and fantasy TV shows on the Netflix charts for the week (the number in parenthesis is the prior week rank):
