The CW Has Cancelled Tom Swift after One Season

The CW’s Tom Swift character may have billions of dollars, good looks, and unlimited wits to help him solve crimes and mysteries, but he still doesn’t have enough resources to overcome the Nielsens.  That show has been cancelled after one season after it got off to a slow start in the ratings.  It has averaged only a 0.05 score based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic, and it loses its lead-in from Superman & Lois starting next week since that show just wrapped up its second season.  And according to Hollywood Reporter, it has not done well in digital viewing so far this season either.

Tom Swift joins a notable group of shows cancelled this season by The CW including Legends of Tomorrow, Legacies, Batwoman, and Charmed.  The network is nearing a deal to sell the majority stake of its ownership to Nextar Media Group and has been clearing off “underperforming” shows from its schedule.  But it has kept some low-rated shows as part of its lineup such as Riverdale and Nancy Drew (Tom Swift is a spin-off from that latter show).  Interestingly, many of the cancelled shows had significant LGBTQ+ representation which may not fit well with the more conservative-leaning Nextar.  The Tom Swift character in The CW series is gay, but more likely than not it was Nielsen that did him in as I have had the show On the Bubble pretty much since it started.  Fans of the show can at least hope for him to make an appearance in an upcoming episode of Nancy Drew.

Tom Swift follows the titular character who is a billionaire inventor who finds himself caught up in a world of conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the death of his father.  It stars Tian Richards, Ashleigh Murray, Marquise Vilsón, Albert Mwangi, and April Parker Jones and it is loosely based on the YA book series of the same name.

The 2021-22 regular season has ended, but there are still quite a number of shows waiting for word on their fate (more on that at this link) plus several Summer entries. 1. You know I thought that the days of being judged for who you are was over, I guess not. The CW network that was sold to Nexstar Media Group cancelled Tom Swift because this show has brought to the small screen with an all black cast, with a black gay super-hero as the lead and a trans man to the forefront. I was reading this article and from what I got from it was that the CW was sold to Nexstar Media Group and if the show is “not wholesome” they will cancel it. They do not want to show cast a leading role that has a black man that just so happens to be apart of the LGBTQ+ community. I guess the idea of a modern day gay sci-fi superhero on the small screen is not wholesome enough, that network must be crazy. Nexstar Media Group said and I quote “the network’s new focus is on promoting more wholesome content” this means they will not promote the gay community and as well as a gay black leading male and a trans male along with an all black cast. That is what Nexstar Media Group is saying. If you don’t believe what I am saying just look at the shows that have been cancelled.
    1. Charmed: a bi-racial cast that has characters in the LGBTQ+ community.
    2. Legacies: a bi-racial cast also that has characters in the LGBTQ+ community.
    3. Naomi: a black female that has the leading role.
    4. Batwoman: another role filled by a black female as the lead
    5. Roswell, New Mexico: a minority cast based in New Mexico.
    6. In The Dark: a female lead that is blind.
I myself would like to protest the CW and Nexstar Media Group for being racist and anti-LGBTQ+. This list is to name a few and as you can see anything that is not as Nexstar Media Group deems wholesome will be cancelled. I really think this network should be protested out. I also really really really hope that another network will pick up this show along with the others.
    Thank you

    1. I’ve been saying this for a while. Cancelled Legends of Tomorrow also had significant LGBTQ+ representation. Can you provide a link to the article you are citing.

  2. “Interestingly, many of the cancelled shows had significant LGBTQ+ representation which may not fit well with the more conservative-leaning Nextar.”

I think the truth is closer to the fact that such heavy handed over-representation of LGBT+ people television is starting to wear thin with the viewing public.
