TNT’s post-apocalyptic drama Snowpiercer will be reaching the end of the line as the show will wrap up with its upcoming fourth season. That news does not come as a surprise as it was previously announced that TNT and TBS (both owned by Warner Bros. Discovery) were bowing out of the scripted programming game. That show has gone through some behind-the-scenes shakeups with four different showrunners touching the series at some point, but it has generally been well-received by the sci fi community (it currently holds an aggregate 94% Fresh Rating and 72% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes). The basic cable channels have apparently found it hard to compete in the scripted programming arena with the streaming services pouring tons of money into their productions. Even the premium cablers have had some trouble with their shows registering with entries like The Last Man on Earth, The Time Traveler’s Wife, and Shining Vale pulling in low viewership numbers this season. When the announcement came that TNT would be dropping scripted programming, I expected that the fourth season of Snowpierver would be its last, and the network has now confirmed that. But that will at least give the creative team the opportunity to wrap up the show’s storylines. Expect the final season to air at some point in early 2023 and prior seasons are available for streaming on HBO Max.
Snowpiercer takes place on a future Earth where the impact of climate change has frozen over the surface of the planet. The last survivors live onboard the titular train which is a thousand cars long and split up between first class, second class, third class, and the rest. But after a series of murders occur, the status quo of the train is thrown in doubt. It stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner, Alison Wright, and Sean Bean and it is based on the 2013 film of the same name directed by Bong Joon-ho.
The 2021-22 regular season has ended, but there are still quite a number of shows waiting for word on their fate (more on that at this link).
