Amazon Renews The Boys for Fourth Season, Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe Gets a Second Season

Coming as absolutely no surprise, Amazon’s superhero romp The Boys has been renewed for a fourth season.  The third season of that show premiered last week, and according to stats from Prime Video the showed improved its audience by 17% from its second season and 234% from its first season.  Originals on the streaming services tend to wrap up after three or four seasons because they deliver diminishing returns on new subscriptions each year, but this is one of those rare shows like Stranger Things and The Witcher which continue to draw new subs to the service.  Amazon’s head of global television Vernon Sanders had the following to say about the show:

From our first conversation with Eric Kripke and the creative team about Season Three of The Boys, we knew the show was continuing to get even bolder—an impressive feat considering the wild success of the Emmy-nominated second season. This stylized world of the series has incredible global reach and the viewership for opening weekend is proof of that.

The Boys has already produced the animated spin-off The Boys Presents: Diabolical which could get a second season, and a live-action spin-off is in the works that is based at a college for young-adult superheroes.  The third season of the show will continue to release new episodes through July.

The Boys follows a group of vigilantes who are trying to bring down the superheroes known as “The Seven” who work for the corrupt company Vought International and who have been abusing their powers. It stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, and Laz Alonso and it is based on the comic book series created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.

In additional renewal news, Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe revival has been renewed for a second season by Netflix.  The first season, which was released in two parts, was titled “Revelation” and the second season will be titled “Revolution”.  It is being described as a stand-alone story that continues from the first season and it will see “He-Man and the heroic warriors face the forces of Skeletor and a deadly threat to the Planet”.  This animated series is considered a continuation of the original ’80s show that is designed to appeal to adults and younger viewers.  It is not tied to the CGI-animated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe which is currently streaming on Netflix nor the upcoming live-action movie based on the franchise.

The 2021-22 regular season has ended, but there are still quite a number of shows waiting for word on their fate (more on that at this link).
