A Sixth Season of Black Mirror Is in the Works at Netflix

It has been nearly three years since the fifth season of Black Mirror was released on Netflix, and I’m sure many fans of the show were wondering if the show would ever return with new episodes.  But the wait is close to over as a sixth season has been announced.  It may still be a while before new eps actually make it to the streaming service (likely late 2022 or early 2023), but at least fans of the show have something to look forward to.

In an interview two years ago, co-creator Charlie Brooker had indicated that he had stepped away from the show stating that  “at the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those.”  But he did not rule out the show returning and he told Digital Spy that the format is very flexible, commenting that “I don’t think there’s anything to stop us… we could do one-offs, we could do an ongoing story, we could do spin-offs.”

Brooker and partner Annabel Jones signed an exclusive development deal with Netflix, but that involved them leaving their prior production company Endemol Shine Group which still holds the rights to Black Mirror.  But apparently a new deal was worked that allows for new episodes.  According to Variety, the new season will be more cinematic in scope, similar to the fifth year which produced only three episodes though each was over an hour in length.  There is no word yet on the episode count of the sixth season.  The first two seasons of the show aired on Channel 4 in Britain before Netflix acquired the rights.

Black Mirror is a sci-fi anthology series that explores a dark and twisted high-tech near-future where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.  Among the guest stars that have appeared on the show are Hayley Atwell, Anthony Mackie, Jodie Whittaker, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jerome Flynn, and Jon Hamm
