The cancellations keep coming this week, but the most recent announcement is not much of a surprise. Hulu has cancelled the animated Marvel series MODOK almost one year after its first season premiered. This show was one of the projects that survived after Marvel Television was shut down and all of the TV projects came under the control of Marvel Studios. There were also plans for more animated entries including Howard the Duck, Tigra and Dazzler, Hit Monkey, and a crossover series to be titled The Offenders. All of those were cancelled in production except Hit Monkey, and that one had its debut on Hulu in November 2021. But neither show seemed to generate the same level of interest or viewership as the Marvel entries on Disney+. MODOK showrunner Jordan Blum claimed to have plans for a second season, and the word was that Kevin Fiege was supportive. But as more time passed, it seem less and less likely that the show would return and Hulu has now officially put it to rest. There is no word yet on Hit Monkey, but the chances of it returning certainly seem slim at this point.
MODOK follows the titular supervillain (the acronym stands for Mental/Mobile/Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing) who has lived a failed life trying to take control of the world. He is removed from his company after it falls into bankruptcy and deals with a mid-life crisis while also trying to tolerate his family. The voice cast includes Patton Oswalt, Aimee Garcia, Ben Schwartz, Melissa Fumero, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
