Cancellation Watch: The Man Who Fell to Earth and Ultraman S2 Fail to Chart, Outlander Slips, and More

Ratings Results of Interest

As we head into the end of the regular season, there will be less in the way of ratings results to report and that will continue into the Summer months.  So through at least September, I will be combining the Cancellation Watch and the Digital Ratings columns into a single post that will come out on Tuesdays (usually).  This week in particular has very little in the way of ratings info with most of The CW’s shows in repeats or preempted.

On Sunday, Showtime’s new sci fi entry The Man Who Fell to Earth had its premiere but failed to chart in the Cable Top 150, pulling in only a 0.02 rating (two one-hundredths of a ratings point) based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 125K total viewers.  The premium cable companies pay less attention to the same-day numbers because they are not beholden to advertisers, but those do act as a leading indicator and suggest that there is not much interest in the show out of the gate.  I will see how it tracks in the coming weeks and also see if there is any news on the digital viewing numbers before elevating its Cancellation Alert.

Over on AMC, Fear the Walking Dead held at a 0.15 rating with 789K total viewers which is a low point for the show.  That one has been renewed for an eighth season, but that could be its last.  On Starz, Outlander slipped to a 0.02 score with 469K total viewers as it heads into its season finale.  It has been renewed for a seventh season, but could be wrapping things up at that point.

On Thursday, Ghosts had a 0.56 rating with 6.2 million total viewers for its season finale.  That one counted as a hit for CBS in its first year and it will be returning for its second season in Fall.

Digital Ratings

There was also very little in the way of digital ratings info to report on as it was a slow week for the numbers across the board.  In the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, there were no sci fi/fantasy shows in the Top 10 for Originals for the week of March 21st to 27th.  Supernatural made its usual appearance in the Top 10 for acquired shows, slipping to the Number 9 slot with an estimated 343 million minutes of viewing.

There were no sci fi/fantasy shows in the Netflix Top 10 for English Language and Non-English Language shows for the week of April 10th to 16th.  All of Us Are Dead dropped out of the latter chart after an eleven-week run, and that one could get a second season if Netflix does not go on a cancelling spree after its recent meltdownUltraman had its Season 2 premiere that week but did not place in the Top 10.  But that one is still set to return for a third and final season.

Sci Fi TV News

In news from the last few days, Epix has given its sci fi/horror series From a second season renewal which should air at some point in 2023.  Also, the upcoming Star Wars series Andor could be set for a three-season run.

And be sure to peruse my irreverent and caffeine-fueled rundown of the news from last week where I look at an animated version of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Netflix’s meltdown after losing a handful of subscribers (leading to the cancellation of the planned Bone animated series), a blu-ray release for 1978’s Dr. Strange, and more.  You can find that over at SciFiTVSite.com.
