Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.
Moon Knight (Disney+)
(Streaming 1st Season, Mini-Series): This show has just released its fourth episode, and fans that were hoping it would continue into a second season may be disappointed. Disney+ has submitted this one (along with Hawkeye, see below) to the Emmys in the limited series category meaning that the streamer has no plans to continue the show beyond its first season anytime in the near future. Like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this one will apparently wrap up its story in one season and is likely setting up the characters for appearances in other MCU projects. Of course, the mini-series designation does not mean that there will never be a second season, it is just further down on the priority list amidst the many Marvel movies and series in the works. For now, I will count it as ended after the current season wraps, but the show could return at some point, especially if viewership remains strong and fans make some noise to support it.
Hawkeye (Disney+)
(Completed 1st Season, Mini-Series): The way that Hawkeye ended certainly suggested a continuation with either Clint Barton continuing to train Kate Bishop to take over as the master archer or Bishop setting out on her own. But it was also designed to re-introduce Kingpin into the MCU and set him up as a big bad who will be carrying over to other projects. (Oops! Spoiler Alert.) And now that it has been pegged as a mini-series, it appears that there are no immediate plans to continue the show proper. A spin-off for the Echo character has already been announced, and the archers could certainly make an appearance in that. I also expect that they will be showing up in some of the other Marvel movies and shows on the way. But for now, I will be counting Hawkeye as ended.
Shining Vale (Starz)
(Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): This supernatural dramedy received very little promotion from Starz, and did not find much of an audience in its first season. It did have Outlander as its lead-in, but viewership for that fantasy drama has dropped off notably and it did not give much of a boost to the freshman show. Shining Vale only averaged a 0.02 rating (that’s two one-hundredths of a ratings point) in its first season which does not count as a good number. It is true that the premium cable channels are not as focused on the same-day ratings and that digital viewing and encore runs can help the show’s performance. But the initial ratings do act as a leading indicator, and those currently have the show firmly On the Bubble. If fans want a second season of this show, they need to make a Call to Action and bring some attention to it.
Raised by Wolves (HBO Max)
(Completed 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): HBO Max’s sci fi series Raised by Wolves wrapped up its second season in March, and there has been no word on a third year yet. The season finale did leave several storylines unresolved and showrunner Aaron Guzikowski is currently working on the third season in case the show does get renewed. There are no viewership numbers available because HBO Max is stingy with releasing audience stats (as are most streaming services), and Nielsen does not include the service in its Streaming Rankings just yet. The show has received some good buzz (currently holding an 80% Fresh Rating and Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes), and it sure seems like the streamer will want to keep this one around for at least one more season to wrap up its storylines. At this point, I believe it has a decent chance of getting renewed.
Naomi (CW)
(Airing 1st Season, Renewal Possible): I have already covered the efforts to get Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman renewed for the 2022-23 season, and Naomi is the other Arrow-verse entry waiting to hear word on its fate. This one started out its first season with decent numbers, getting a boost from Superman & Lois as its lead-in. And it is still performing above the network’s average rating for the current season, but its numbers have dropped notably of late. According to Deadline, due to the pending sale of the network only about two DC-related shows will make it to the upcoming schedule between this, LoT, Batwoman, and the Gotham Knights pilot. And with the numbers currently lagging for Naomi, it could find itself on the chopping block. Fans should definitely take to the social networks with a Call to Action if they want this one to return for a second season. There is also a possibility this could shift to HBO Max if fans can convince Warner Bros. to keep it going.
Firebite (AMC+)
(Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This Australian vampire romp has not received a lot of attention stateside yet, but it has set itself up to continue for a second season and possibly more. The show follows the indigenous people of the country dealing with vampires who were brought there centuries ago and who have developed a taste for the blood of “blackfellas”. No viewership numbers are available but the show currently holds a 86% Fresh Rating and 74% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes. It is certainly not an expensive series to produce compared to the big-dollar productions from the high-profile streamers. And AMC+ should have an incentive to bring it back to support its initial foray into scripted programming. I would expect to see a second and possibly third season from this one, with an announcement likely coming in the next month or so.
