Status Updates: Batwoman Writers Encourage Fans to Lobby for 4th Season, Astrid & Lilly Fans Are Stepping Up, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Batwoman (CW)

(Completed 3rd Season, Renewal Possible): There was a time when The CW would never cancel a third season show no matter the ratings, but new owners could be moving in soon and that might shake things up.  I discuss all of that network’s shows still awaiting word on their fate in more detail at this link, but it is worth noting that the writer’s of Batwoman are engaging the fans and trying to get them to stump for a fourth season. They put out a tweet telling the fans to watch the third season now that it is on HBO Max for an encore run and to get #RenewBatwoman trending.  I currently have this show at Renewal Possible status, but a Call to Action from the fans can certainly help to nudge network execs towards a fourth season nod.

Astrid & Lilly Save the World (Syfy)

(Completed 1st Season, Cancellation Likely): This fun little monster mashup has wrapped up its first season, but the ratings were low and Syfy is notorious for cancelling acquired shows like this that is using to fill up space on the schedule.  I have seen the hashtag #AstridAndLillySeason2 starting to trend on Twitter, and the show’s production company Blue Ice Productions has encouraged fans to watch and re-watch it on official platforms to prove there it has an audience (Syfy’s website and app are the best places to watch because views will be counted without the Nielsen filter).  I don’t like this one’s chances for a second season on Syfy, but a Call to Action from fans could help it to find a new venue.

Pacific Rim: The Black (Netflix)

(Returning, Final Season): The second season of this animated spin-off from the feature film franchise has been announced as its last.  It was renewed for a second year in advance of its premiere in Spring 2021, but there was no indication at the time that it would wrap up at that point.  Netflix has been concentrating on shorter runs of its originals as it continues to churn through scripted programming, and I am guessing that viewership for the first season was not sufficient for them to keep the show going into a third year.  There may also have been licensing issues with the property.  Whether this one shifts to a different venue at some point remains to be seen.

Resident Alien (Syfy)

(On Hiatus, Renewal Possible): This show has completed the first half of its second season and will resume new episodes at some point in Summer.  It’s numbers are down year-over-year, but that is true of most shows and it is still performing quite well for a Syfy original. It also continues to get good buzz and seems to be generally well-liked by the sci fi community, so I would expect it to get a third season nod unless its numbers tank over the second half of its current season.

Raising Dion (Netflix)

(Completed 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): It is certainly difficult to predict that status of Netflix originals these days with shows that draw millions of viewers getting axed on the short shrift (Archive 81, Cowboy Bebop, Jupiter’s Legacy, and more).  This show has received some good buzz over its first two seasons and its second year spent three weeks in the Netflix Top 10 and four weeks in the Nielsen Top 10 for Streaming Originals.  That does not guarantee it a renewal, but I would say it has a decent chance of returning for a third year.  Don’t expect too much beyond that, though.
