Status Updates: Legends of Tomorrow Not Done Yet, Shining Vale Starts On the Bubble, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Legends of Tomorrow (CW)

(Completed 7th Season, Renewal Possible): The season finale for The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow may have seemed like a series final to some, but co-showrunner Keto Shimizu has indicated that is not necessarily the case.  The show has not been renewed for an eighth season yet and there currently are some uncertainties with new owners possibly moving in (more on that at this link), but Shimizu indicated that the final Season 7 episode was not intended to wrap up the show.  I still consider LoT to have a decent chance of renewal at this point, even with new owners, unless the network goes through a complete shakeup.

Batwoman (CW)

(Completed 3rd Season, On the Bubble): This is another CW show that wrapped up its most recent season with a sense of finality and it makes me wonder if network execs knew the sale might be coming before the year began and instructed writers to start resolving storylines.  As I discussed previously, I consider this show to be a toss-up for renewal with the sale looming.  Before that, I considered a fourth season a sure thing because that’s the way The CW roles.  But Batwoman has been one of the lower-rated Arrow-verse entries, and it is certainly possible it will not return in the coming season.

Shinning Vale (Starz)

(Airing 1st Season, On the Bubble): Starz certainly thought it had some star power for its new horror-comedy Shining Vale with Courteney Cox, Mira Sorvino, and Greg Kinnear in the cast.  And the show has registered fairly well with critics so far.  But the network should have put more effort into promoting it because the double-episode series premiere barely registered in the ratings with only a 0.02 score based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic and 204K total viewers.  The premium cable channels do not pay as much attention to the same-day numbers because they are not beholden to advertisers.  But those do act as a leading indicator, and this show is certainly off to a very slow start and I have it On the Bubble coming out of the gates.

Space Force (Netflix)

(Streaming 2nd Season, On the Bubble): This workplace comedy is another show with some notable names attached that is falling short in viewership.  It comes from The Office‘s Greg Daniels and stars Steve Carell, John Malkovich, and Lisa Kudrow, but those names have not brought the show much of an audience.  The second season only spent one week in the lower rungs of the Netflix Top 10 before dropping out.  The streamer seemed hesistant to renew the show after its first season and may think even longer after the poor performance of its second year.  It’s still possible this one could come back for a third and final season, but I wouldn’t expect anything beyond that.

Hit Monkey (Hulu)

(Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): We are now going on four months since this animated Marvel series premiered and there has been no word on its fate.  Both this and MODOK are cast-offs from Marvel Television before it was closed and absorbed into Marvel Studios.  And it is currently looking like they could go the way of live-action Marvel Television outcast Helstrom which was cancelled after one season.  I am moving Hit Monkey‘s status to On the Bubble, and I have serious doubts that it or MODOK will be back for a second season.
