Status Updates: Resident Alien, Raising Dion, and Raised by Wolves Could All Be Headed to a Third Season

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Resident Alien (Syfy)

(Airing 2nd Season, Renewal Possible):  This show got off to a good start in its second season, improving upon its prior season average with its debut, though its numbers have dropped off since then.  It is still performing quite well for a Syfy series, though (which does not have much in the way of original programing at the moment), and currently appears to be on track for a third season renewal.

Raising Dion (Netflix)

(Streaming 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): The second season of this superhero show has spent four weeks in the Netflix Top 10 and it has received some good buzz from the critics that have paid attention to it (which is on the low side).  This show seems like a candidate to follow the typical Netflix pattern of three to four seasons with its final year announced in advance.  Expect at least a third season from this one, though that could be its last.

Raised by Wolves (HBO Max)

(Streaming 2nd Season, Renewal Possible): HBO Max is still new enough that we don’t know if that service will follow the pattern we have seen from Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu of capping off their shows around the third or fourth season.  The viewership numbers are also not reported in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet.  But Raised by Wolves has been well-received by critcs and audiences so far, holding a combined 91% Fresh Rating and 78% Audience score across its first two seasons.  I would expect at least a third year from this one if not more.

Severance (Apple TV+)

(Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible): Apple TV+ usually gives an advance renewal to its shows prior their premiere, but there has been no official statement on this dark workplace drama yet.  It is a high-profile series, though, with names like Ben Stiller and Adam Scott attached to it.  And it has received good marks from critics and viewers, currently holding a 97% Fresh Rating and 90% Audience Score at Rotten Tomatoes.  Production Weekly has already indicated that production has begun on the second season, so expect an announcement at any time.

Blade Runner: Black Lotus (Adult Swim)

(Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This animated Blade Runner spin-off wrapped up its main story arc of its first season, but it still has room to continue to expand on the universe.  The ratings were okay for an Adult Swim entry, and it may have performed even better in digital viewing on Crunchyroll.  It did not receive a lot of attention nor much in the way of buzz during its first year, but it could still stick around for a second season.

Day of the Dead (Syfy)

(Completed 1st Season, Cancellation Likely):  As of this writing, it has been over two months since this zombie-series wrapped up and there has been no word on its fate.  The showrunners have indicated that they have plenty of plans for future seasons, but this one received little in the way of promotion and barely registered in the ratings in its first season.  It is possible that the show has international funding and/or syndication that could keep it viable, but if this one developed any sort of fanbase, they should make a Call to Action on the social networks to bring it more attention.
