Just yesterday I posted a Status Updates piece that suggested HBO Max’s Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker had a good chance of returning for a second season, and that was confirmed later in the day. The series had received the official greenlight to continue for a second year as announced on Twitter by James Gunn and John Cena:

The news comes as no surprise as the show has been well-received so far in its first season. HBO Max viewership is not currently tracked by the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, but Parrot Analytics has indicated that the show has performed quite well in streaming in its first season. And it currently holds a 95% Fresh Rating and an 87% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
James Gunn wrote and directed all of the episodes from the first season and will do the same in the second year. There may be a bit of a delay on that second season, though, because Gunn mentioned in a interview that he needs to take a break first after completing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3 movie. He has also indicated that another Suicide Squad spin-off is in the works, but no details are available on that yet. The Season 1 finale for Peacemaker was released today on HBO Max.
Peacemaker follows the title character who has vowed to fight for peace no matter how many people he must kill to get it. He is given a release from prison upon the condition that he work with a deep undercover group that is dealing with a threat to the human race. It stars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, and Steve Agee and it is based on the DC (and previously Charlton) Comics character of the same name.

I haven’t seen any of the Suicide Squad movies (something I will rectify in the near future) but decided to give this show a try and I’m glad I did. It’s funny and great! The barrage of 80’s-style power metal throughout the show gets a bit long in the tooth sometimes but that’s part of its’ shtick. The opening title sequence for every episode is a joy to behold because its’ level of goofiness. Great fun! Glad to see it’s been renewed for the eagerly awaited Season 2.
