Status Updates: Never Say Never for The Nevers, Day of the Dead Could Be Dead, and More

Status Updates: Updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows currently airing/streaming or those waiting for word on their fates. You can see the status of all the active, returning, upcoming, and recently cancelled/ended shows at our Cancellation Watch Page.

The Nevers (HBO)

(On Hiatus, Renewal Possible): This show’s first season was interrupted by pandemic-related production delays, but HBO decided to go ahead and release the first six episodes in Spring 2021.  The second half of the season (also consisting of six episodes), should be released by Spring 2022.  So far, the show has pulled decent linear ratings and has done quite well in digital viewing.  If the viewership holds up when it finishes out its first season, then it could possibly come back for a second year.

Day of the Dead (Syfy)

(Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble):  The linear ratings for this show were tepid in its first season which is not surprising seeing as Syfy did very little to promote it.  The network has no ownership stake in the series, so they only make money from advertising which is driven by same-day viewing.  The show may have international partnerships which keep it viable, and that is the only reason I have not moved to Cancellation Likely status yet.  At this point, I would say that chances of a second season are slim, and fans will certainly need to make a Call to Action on the social networks if they want the show to continue.

4400 (The CW)

(On Hiatus, Renewal Possible): This reboot of the early-2000 series does not count as a breakout hit for The CW, but it has performed well compared to the network’s other programming so far.  And it has the advantage that it airs on the “Happy Net” which prefers to renew shows rather than cancel them.  The CW typically issues a blanket renewal of its Fall shows around January or February, and I would expect this one to be included with that.

Hawkeye (Disney+)

(Completed 1st Season, Renewal Possible): Like WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, this one was designed as an “event series”, but its story was not as close-ened and it does have greater potential to continue into an ongoing series.  Director and executive producer Rhys Thomas has indicated that he would like to return to the show, but there are currently no plans in place for it to continue.  A spin-off featuring Maya Lopez/Echo is in the works, and if Hawkeye draws strong enough viewership, perhaps it could continue into a second year.

The Expanse (Prime Video)

(Streaming 6th and Final Season, Ending): This show’s sixth season was announced in advance as its last, giving it the chance to wrap up its storylines.  It covered the story through the first six books of the novel series, but there are three more that follow from that.  Those take place after a time jump, though, so it made some sense to wrap the series up for now with its sixth season.  Writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck have indicated that they approached the show with a six-season arc in mind and consider it to be on “pause” at the moment.  As the legacy of this series grows (already considered to be a top-flight sci fi TV entry), it is possible that it could return at some point to finish out the full story from the books.

Firebite (AMC+)

(Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible): This is one of the first originals for the AMC+ streaming service, so it is hard to gauge its status at this point.  Typically, the newer streamer services are willing to stand behind their originals for at least a season or two.  And this show’s performance may depend more heavily on the viewership and new subscriptions it draws from its home country of Australia.  But at this point, I would say that it has a decent chance of sticking around for a second year.
