Sci Fi TV Update Expands to Twice per Week:

The Sci Fi TV Update posts will be expanding to twice per week starting this week. This will be for the regular television season since there is usually more in the way of news and updates to report from the months of September to May. The Tuesday posts will cover the ratings results from the prior week (which will include the full ratings grid) and the Friday posts will cover the digital ratings as well as any major ratings news from the prior few days. And both will cover breaking news, status updates, and schedule announcements. These posts will likely revert back to weekly during the Summer and also possibly during the Winter hiatus. But for now, look for them on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Sci Fi TV Development:

A new version of the classic sci fi series Babylon 5 is in the works which is described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot.” The good news associated with that is that creator J. Michael Straczynski will be onboard and will be penning the scripts (he wrote the vast majority of the episodes for the original series). The not so good news is that this is headed to The CW, a network known for YA-focused melodramas and superhero shows that often deliver plenty of copy-and-paste stories and dialogue. JMS had a five-year story arc that he was able to complete for the original series, and he was also given a lot of creative freedom with the show (you can read more about B5 at this link). Whether that will hold true for the new version, remains to be seen. The CW will likely be considering this for the 2022-23 season.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

Russel T. Davies will be returning to Doctor Who as executive producer and showrunner starting with its fourteenth season.  Davies shepherded the revival which kicked off in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. He left the show in 2009 but will be returning in 2023 with a new actor taking up the torch from Joddie Whittaker who will be departing after 2022 (there has been no announcement yet on who will replace Whittaker) . . . Netflix has given a third season renewal to The Witcher ahead of its second season premiere.  The streamer also plans to continue to expand the franchise and build on the “Witcher-verse” with more projects on the way.  The second season of the the show premieres on December 17th . . . A spin-off from Amazon’s popular series The Boys is currently in the works.  That will take place in a college for superheroes and Agent Carter showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters will be at the helm.  The series will likely be targetting a 2022 release . . . MTV’s reboot of Teen Wolf will be getting a revival movie at Paramount+ and series creator Jeff Davis will be onboard.  He will also be developing a series based on the Wolf Pack books written by Edo Van Belkom (which are not linked to Teen Wolf) . . Jeffrey Dean Morgan has stated that a Negan spin-off from The Walking Dead could happen.  He says that there have been “things discussed with me and network people”, but no series has been given the greenlight at this point.  However, AMC does plan on expanded the TWD universe over the next few years.
