NBC’s freshman sci fi series Debris will not be continuing for a second season as the network has officially announced its cancellation. The news does not come as a big surprise as I have had it On the Bubble for most of its run. The show got off to a decent start with its premiere but saw its ratings drop notably over subsequent weeks. It averaged only a 0.40 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demo over its first season, notably lower than the network’s average. In delayed viewing, it saw a gain of about 70% for its ratings in the demo, but that was not enough to convince network execs to bring it back for a second season.
I had considered moving this show to Cancellation Likely status earlier, but held back thinking that the network might approach its cancellation/renewal decisions differently due to the pandemic-impacted season. I also considered that it might have a chance to move to NBC’s streaming platform Peacock, similar to what CBS did with Evil. But when it comes down to it, the network looked at the bottom-line ratings and pulled the plug on the show just like it has done in past seasons. While fan reaction was mixed for the show, it did develop a following over its short run. Those fans should make a Call to Action on the social networks to see if they can convince NBC to keep it going as a streaming original.
Debris takes place after pieces from an alien spaceship have fallen to Earth, affecting the people and surroundings nearby. An international task force is formed to locate and collect the alien debris for further study, and also to keep it away from those who would use it for nefarious means. It stars Jonathan Tucker, Riann Steele, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scroobius Pip, and it was created by Fringe alum J. H. Wyman.
