Amazon has given an early second year renewal to its fantasy series The Wheel of Time ahead of its first season debut. Production has wrapped on the show’s first season and it should be premiering on the streaming service later this year. It is based on the epic fantasy series by Robert Jordan and spans fifteen books and over ten thousand pages of print. Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELD, Chuck) developed the series and had the following to say about the renewal:
The belief Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have shown in The Wheel of Time has been incredible to see throughout the entire process of making this show. Getting a second season order before the first season has even premiered is such a vote of confidence in the work we are doing and the property itself, and we couldn’t be happier to be able to continue to live and work in the world Robert Jordan created. This property is one I’ve loved since I was a teenager, and seeing it brought to life with the resources to make it truly worthy of what’s on the page is something I can’t wait for the other fans of the books to see. And Season 2 just keeps expanding the world we built in Season 1.
The renewal does not come as a surprise considering the investment the company has made in the series. A premiere date for the first season has not been set yet, but expect an announcement in the coming months.
The Wheel of Time takes place in a world where magic exists but can only be used by women known as channelers. One of these women leads a group of young people whose village was attacked by the evil entity known as the Dark One, and one of those five could be the saviour or destroyer of humanity. It stars Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, Zoë Robins, Barney Harris, and Madeleine Madden.
