The second season of Evil has been in limbo all year, but CBS has announced that it will be moving to a new platform.
The supernatural drama Evil debuted on CBS last season and pulled decent if not spectacular ratings in the Thursday 10 PM EST timeslot. It was renewed for a second year, but as we approach the end of the regular season, it still has not received a premiere date. Like many other shows, it was delayed due to COVID-related production shutdowns, but almost every other show from last season has returned by this point or at least received a premiere date. The lack of news on Evil certainly has had some wondering if the show might be on the outs at the network, but now we know that the second season will finally see the light of day, though on a different venue.
As CBS prepares to unveil its schedule at its Upfront presentation to the sponsors today, it has announced that Evil will be shifting to the Paramount+ streaming platform (formerly CBS All Access) for its second season (along with SEAL Team and possibly Clarice). This is actually good news for the show because it gives it a better chance for survival and more opportunity to explore its dark themes. As a serialized entry exploring supernatural mysteries and evil in human nature, it is not a good fit on a CBS scheduled dominated by procedurals, sitcoms, and unscripted fare. And that network has tended to have little patience with genre shows in the past. Paramount+ has a much wider variety of scripted programming, including the Star Trek shows, and Evil already performed well in streaming when its first season was released on Netflix.
Sadly, a premiere date has still not been set for the show, but at least we know that the second season is on the way. And its chances of surviving into a third year and beyond have improved now that it is moving to a venue that can better support it. NBC has not released word on the fate of its new series Debris yet, nor has third-season entry Manifest received a renewal either. But it is possible that one or both of those shows could make a move to Peacock seeing as neither have performed well in linear viewing this year and its schedule is already pretty full. I completely agree!! I love this show & the fact that they keep moving shows to their streaming services(all the networks) is crap & is obviously about forcing you to pay for their streaming service in order to see it!! My God i already pay a fortune for the TV package i have now!!
Great cast, interesting premise, sometimes very compelling episode plots, but a little too safe, too shy on the horror, so Paramount+ taking over is really good news.
I still miss The Exorcist series, but Evil, while a different beast, was a good drop-in replacement from the get go. 🙂
I only watched the first three episodes. Did it continue with the Scooby Doo endings where each episode unmasked the supernatural mystery as something not supernatural at all?
Agree on The Exorcist. That was definitely cancelled too soon and would love to that one re-emerge on one of the streaming services.
Argh. This is crap. Evil was one of the better genre shows of the last few seasons, and now it’s being dropped behind a pay wall where fewer and fewer folks will find it.
On the other hand, it has a better chance of surviving past its second season there. CBS is usually quick to pull the plug on genre entries, and Evil never had high ratings to begin with. It has performed well in streaming, though, so Paramount+ may be the best location for it.
