Ratings Results of Interest

On Sunday, The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow returned for its sixth season and only managed a 0.10 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 443K total viewers. That is down by over 50% from its fifth season average, but all of the broadcast network scripted shows have faced ratings challenges this year. It has already been renewed for a seventh season, but don’t be surprised if that is its last. Batwoman shifted to the 9 PM EST timeslot and saw its numbers slip to a 0.10 score with 426K total viewers.

On HBO on Sunday, The Nevers improved a tick to a 0.07 rating with 515K total viewers. That one is also streaming on HBO Max and is making up some of the slack with digital viewing. On AMC, Fear the Walking Dead held steady at a 0.26 rating with just over one million total viewers. That show has already been renewed for a seventh season.

On Friday, MacGyver had its series finale on CBS and managed only a 0.45 rating with 4.5 million total viewers, one of its lower scores this season. Fans are still lobbying for a sixth season of that show, but it appears unlikely. Over on Syfy, Van Helsing remained steadily low at a 0.04 rating with 227K total viewers. On Thursday, NBC’s Manifest aired a double episode which averaged a 0.45 rating with 3.2 million total viewers across the two hours.  That show’s numbers have been on the low side the last few weeks, though I still believe it has a shot at a fourth season.

On Wednesday, The CW’s Kung Fu improved slightly to a 0.18 rating with 1.1 million total viewers. That show just received a second season renewal (more on that below). On Monday, NBC’s Debris improved a tick to a 0.38 rating with 2.6 million total viewers. That show remains firmly On the Bubble as we head into the Upfronts when the networks will announce their schedule for next season.

Sci Fi TV News of Note

Amazon’s animated superhero series Invincible, based on the Robert Kirman comic, has been renewed through a third season. Streaming originals tend to cap off around their third or fourth year, but the animated entries sometimes go longer . . . The CW’s martial arts/fantasy series Kung Fu has been given a second season renewal by the network. That show has seen decent numbers since debuting in Spring and is currently one of the network’s top-rated entries. . . Also receiving a renewal from The CW is Stargirl which has been given a third year nod ahead of its second season premiere in August. That show performed well in linear viewing for the network last Summer and became part of its permanent lineup when the DCU streaming service folded . . . The Batman prequel series Pennyworth has wrapped up its second season on Epix and may be on the move. This one could become a shared property with HBO Max, and if a deal can be worked out, then a third season will follow . . . J.K. Simmons has been cast as the co-lead next to Sissy Spacek in Amazon’s upcoming sci fi series Lightyears.  He takes over the role from Ed O’Neill who was originally cast in the part. Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu, Streaming 4th Season, Status – Renewed): This show has been given an early Season 5 renewal by Hulu ahead of its fourth season premiere which is significant because it gets the show past the four-season wall that seems to impact most of the streaming originals. The showrunner has plans for this one to run seven to eight seasons, and the renewal will get it one year closer to that goal.

Pacific Rim The Black (Netflix, Streaming 1st Season, Status – Renewed): This show received a two-season order in advance of its premiere. Animated originals from Netflix do tend to stick around longer than the live-action shows, so it could continue for a few more years.
