Coming as no surprise, The CW has given a second season renewal to its martial arts/fantasy series Kung Fu. That show got off to a strong start this Spring and currently ranks as one of the network’s top-rated shows based on the linear numbers, and it likely also sees notable gains from digital viewing. It is a reboot of the 1970’s series that starred David Carradine and it has been moved to a modern setting and that adds fantasy elements into the mix.
Also getting a renewal notice is Stargirl which is set to return for its second season in August. That one started as an original for DC Universe, and during its first season, and it aired episodes on The CW the day after their streaming release. DCU is now defunct, but the show performed well enough in the linear ratings that The CW decided to pick it up for a second season and fold it into the Arrow-verse. The third season renewal comes in advance of its Season 2 premiere and was pretty much expected.
Kung Fu follows a Chinese-American woman who has learned to master the martial arts in a Shaolin temple in China, but who returns to her home in San Francisco after her teacher is killed. She tries to reconnect with her family while also dealing with the crime in her city and trying to find the assassin who is searching for magical swords that possess much power. It stars Olivia Liang, Kheng Hua Tan, Eddie Liu, Shannon Dang, and Jon Prasida.
Stargirl focuses on the daughter of the legendary superhero Starman. She comes into possession of her father’s cosmic staff and tries to assemble a group of superheroes to take the place of the defunct Justice Society of America. It stars Brec Bassinger, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, and Luke Wilson.
