Fans Continue the Fight to #BringWynonnaHome for a Fifth Season

Syfy has cancelled Wynonna Earp after four seasons, but the producers and fans are trying to find a new home for the show.

What Happened?

Syfy has elected not to proceed with a fifth season of its supernatural western Wynonna Earp, and that has the producers shopping the show around to other venues while the fans are out in full force to assure that it continues beyond its fourth year. That show has never scored very high ratings according to the Nielsens, but it has a very active, very vocal, and very dedicated fanbase that has supported it throughout its four-year run. When the fourth season was in doubt due to the financial struggles of its production company, fans banded together and raised money to put up billboards in Times Square to bring attention to the show. Syfy ultimately stepped in and helped with the funding for the fourth season, allowing that to go forward. But the network decided that was the extent of its involvement and is bowing out after its fourth year wraps up in April.

A fifth season had been announced for the show at the time that it received its fourth-year renewal, but that was prior to IDW Entertainment running into financial difficulties, and if it does happen the property will have to move to a new network. As mentioned above, the producers are searching for new venues with the fans doing their part as well.

What Are the Fans Doing?

Fans of Wynonna Earp are among the most dedicated and diligent that I have seen over the years and they currently have a multi-pronged approach in their attempts to save the show. There is an online petition for the show, and they have it well in the lead in our Save My Show poll here at CancelledSciFi.com.  They are currently very active online lobbying various networks to pick up the show for a fifth season.  And they also have a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money to put up billboards in Earp Square in Purgatory, which is actually Didsbury, Alberta, CA where the show is filmed.  They have already gone well past the original goal of $6,000 and the money will be donated back to Didsbury municipal projects as well as to Keep Alberta Rolling, a certified nonprofit which brings awareness to the film industry in Alberta.

They have set up the #BringWynonnaHome website to get out the word on all of the current efforts and you can also follow this Twitter account for the latest updates.

Can the Show Be Saved?

Absolutely. We have seen other shows like The Expanse and Lucifer saved by the streaming services, and NBC gave Timeless a second season and then a series finale after the fans rallied in support of the show. Wynonna Earp fans, who affectionately call themselves Earpers, have a long history of supporting and bringing attention to their show. With the producers also actively involved in shopping it around, the various venues are certainly aware of the show’s plight and the fact that it has a very engaged fanbase. That should especially interest the streaming services because picking up the show could lead to a surge in subscriptions.

In the show’s favor is the fact that it is not very expensive to produce. This is not one of the lavish, high-dollar productions that have been trying to outdo Hollywood blockbusters of late. It has a modest budget that makes it a relatively inexpensive acquisition for a network or streaming service. And the network that picks it up is not necessarily getting into it for the long run as fans mostly want the promised fifth season, though they would be more than happy if it continued beyond that. The first three seasons are streaming on Netflix, and it certainly seems like that would be the most likely venue to keep the show going.

This show has the support of the fans, the cast, and the crew to continue on for at least one more year. It just needs a venue willing to pick it up for a dozen or more episodes, and there are plenty of viable options out there.

What Is Wynonna Earp, and Why Do People Love It So Much?

This series first premiered on Syfy in Spring of 2016 based on the IDW comic book series of the same name by Beau Smith. It follows Wynonna Earp who is the great-great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp.  She has inherited his enchanted gun “Peacemaker” and must battle the “revenants” in and around her hometown of Purgatory which are the reincarnated outlaws that Wyatt killed. Joining her in her battles are her sister Waverly Earp as well as Doc Holliday who has not aged since Wyatt Earp was alive. As the series progresses, they become involved with the Black Badge Division and start fighting supernatural beings in the Ghost River Triangle which is near Purgatory.

Consider it to be similar to The CW’s long-running Supernatural, but with female leads. The show delivers good stories, good characters, good action, and good fun even if it doesn’t have the budget of some of the more high-profile entries currently on television. It is noted for its strong female characters as well as LGBT themes, and it has been generally well-received by critics. It has had a good run so far and deserves at least a fifth season to wrap up all its storylines. It currently airs on Syfy at 10 PM EST on Fridays and the most recent episodes are also available for streaming on the network’s app. And as mentioned above, the first three seasons are streaming on Netflix.

Be sure to lend your support to make sure that this one does not become yet another genre gem that is cut short before its time.
