IMDb is advancing its participation in the ranking business and has put out a list of the ten highest-ranked shows of 2020 based on that site’s MOVIEmeter scoring system:
This list is a ranking of the Top 10 TV shows in production during 2020 that were most consistently popular with IMDb users. These rankings are not based upon critical assessments or Nielsen ratings, but on pageviews by our combined web and mobile audience of more than 200 million unique monthly visitors.
If you subscribe to IMDb Pro, you can see the MOVIEmeter score for each series (as well as movies) by week. I have kept an eye on these scores this year, particularly for the streaming shows for which I do not have too much in the way of audience numbers beyond the limited Nielsen Streaming Top 10. I may start working the MOVIEmeter scores into my tracking of shows going into 2021.
Topping IMDb’s list is Amazon’s The Boys, which comes as no surprise. That show has proven to be quite a hit for the streaming service and a spin-off series is already in the works. Six of the Top 10 shows are sci fi/fantasy entries which I find humorous seeing as the broadcast networks still don’t get that there is a large audience out there for the genre (and no broadcast net show made it to the list). There is little surprise among most of the genre shows included on the list: The Mandalorian, The Umbrella Academy, Westworld, and The Witcher. Though I did find it interesting that Netflix’s German series Dark made it all the way to Number 3, outranking the four better-known shows just mentioned.
Netflix dominates the list, showing that its assault of originals that rarely go more than three or four seasons (Dark is a prime example) is still managing to attract audiences. We will see how much longer that strategy will prove successful, though. IMDb’s full list is at this link, but if you do not want to click through each entry, I have compiled the Top 10 below.
1. The Boys (Amazon)
2. Money Heist (Netflix)
3. Dark (Netflix)
4. Ozark (Netflix)
5. The Mandalorian (Disney+)
6. The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix)
7. The Umbrella Academy (Netflix)
8. Westworld (HBO)
9. The Witcher (Netflix)
10. The Crown (Netflix)
