Breaking News: Amazon Has Renewed The Expanse for a Sixth Season, But That Will Be Its Last

There is good news and bad news for fans of Amazon’s sci fi series The Expanse. It has been renewed for a sixth year ahead of its fifth season premiere in December, but that will be its last. That series first premiered on Syfy in 2015, but was cancelled by the cable channel in 2018 after three seasons. Amazon then picked up the show for a fourth season which premiered on Prime Video in December 2019. The fifth season is set to premiere on the streamer on December 15th, with the sixth and final year likely arriving in late 2021. Cas Anvar will not be returning for the final season after several sexual misconduct allegations were raised against the actor earlier this year.

Based on the book series of the same name, the upcoming fifth season will cover parts of the fifth and sixth books. A ninth novel in the series is currently in the works, but since the show will end with its sixth season, it will likely not make it that far into the story. There is no word on why Amazon decided to end the show’s run after its sixth season (possible due to its high production costs), though originals on the streaming services rarely go more than four seasons. There is also no word on whether the sixth season will get an extended episode count to better wrap up the show’s storylines. The Expanse definitely has a dedicated fanbase who lobbied hard to save its after its cancellation by Syfy, and it remains to see if they will try to get another venue to pick up the property. (If a campaign is planned, CancelledSciFi.com is happy to host a page on this site).

The Expanse takes place hundreds of years in the future when humans have colonized Mars, the asteroids, and the outer planets. The discovery of an alien molecule sets the various factions in the solar system close to the brink of war in oder to control the power its represents, and Captain James Holden and his crew find themselves torn between sides. It stars Steven Strait, Thomas Jane, Cas Anvar, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, and Frankie Adams and it is based on the series of novels by James S.A. Corey.
