CBS All Access has extended the voyage of Star Trek: Discovery into a fourth year one day after the premiere of its third season. The renewal announcement comes as no surprise as word had already leaked out that production was ramping up for another season. From what I understand, Discovery has not been a huge hit for the streaming service (though I have not seen solid numbers either way) and it has also received mixed reactions from fans of the franchise (it currently holds only a 45% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes). But it is apparently performing well enough for CBS All Access to order another season, and Alex Kurtzman has indicated that he has several more years planned for the series. The streamer has invested heavily in the franchise with three shows currently active (Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Lower Decks), and more on the way including the Captain Pike spin-off series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Star Trek: Discovery takes place prior to the events of the original series and focuses on Michael Burnham who is a senior officer aboard the experimental starship of the title. She and her fellow officers find themselves caught in a war with the Klingons and then faced with a strange phenomenon that appears to threaten the future of the Federation. It stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, and Michelle Yeoh.
