Ratings Results of Interest

On Thursday, Star Trek: Discovery arrived in Prime Time for an encore run of its first season, but did not draw too much interest. It managed only a 0.2 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.7 million total viewers. It did not have much of a lead-in from reality series Love Island in the 9 PM EST hour, though, and the entire first season already ran on CBS All Access back in 2017.  But I still expected higher ratings than this. The numbers for the encore run do not necessarily impact the show as a whole, which returns for its third season on CBS All Access in October and has allegedly begun production on its fourth season (though there has not been an official renewal announcement). And the premiere episode was previously broadcast in Prime Time to launch the show (exactly three years earlier). But it appears unlikely this run–which is just padding out a schedule depleted by the production delays–will do much to build up the audience for the show.

On Sunday, HBO’s Lovecraft Country improved slightly to 0.20 rating with 755K total viewers as that show appears to be on track for a second season renewal. On Wednesday, The CW’s The 100 slipped back to a 0.1 rating with 523K total viewers for its penultimate episode. That show airs its series finale this week. On Tuesday, Dead Pixels remained at a 0.1 rating with 305K total viewer for The CW for its season finale. It has already been renewed for a second season in Britain.

Cancellation Watch

The CW announced last week that its DC superhero series Supergirl will be coming to an end with its upcoming sixth season. That news comes as no surprise as I had expected that one to wrap up around that time and I still believe that Legends of Tomorrow could be close to ending as well. The Arrow-verse shows are waning in popularity, and I expect some changes to that franchise in the coming years. More on that at this link. In digital ratings news, Netflix’s Lucifer continues to reign atop the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 as it remained at the Number 1 slot for a second week in a row. More on that at this link.

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

Utopia (Amazon, Streaming, Status – Renewal Possible): As with any original series on the streaming services, this show has a decent chance of sticking around for a second season. But don’t expect an extended run because the streamers tend to cap off their shows around the third season.

The Twilight Zone (CBSAA, Streaming, Status – Renewal Possible): The critical response to this show has been decent across its first two seasons and it certainly comes at a much lower cost to CBS All Access than the Star Trek entries. I had thought that it had a decent chance of returning for a third season, but the planned reboot of the streaming service for 2021 may shake things up.
