HBO Max has been in renewal-mode lately as it announced yet another renewal of one of its genre originals today. The animated Harley Quinn, which moved from DC Universe to HBO Max last month, will be returning for a third season. As with Doom Patrol and Raised by Wolves, the announcement does not come as a surprise. The show has proven quite popular over its first two seasons and the streamer has an incentive to keep its originals going to build up an audience. Apparently some budget issues had to be worked out to clear Harley Quinn for a third season return, but it never seemed likely that would not add much of a hurdle. The streamer’s head of original content had noted that the show “has risen to the top as one of the most-watched Max originals on the platform” since moving there in August.
Meanwhile, the DC Universe platform is headed for an overhaul as expected. It will be renamed DC Universe Infinite and will shift its focus to comics with “more than 24,000 comic books, along with digital-first comics, exclusive access to DC fan events, and a stream of recently released comics six months after the physical versions hit store shelves” according to Deadline. All of the streaming originals had already left the service with Stargirl going to The CW and the rest moving to HBO Max (Swamp Thing was cancelled after one season). The shift in focus for DC Universe has been expected since its originals started departing from the service.
Harley Quinn focuses on the titular anti-hero as she sets out on her own in Gotham City following her breakup with the Joker. The voice cast includes Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Jason Alexander, and Alan Tudyk.
