In a Friday of cancellations, Showtime announced that Penny Dreadful City of Angels, a spin-off from horror mash-up Penny Dreadful, will not be returning for a second season. The news comes as no surprise seeing as the ratings for the show were very low in its first season. It only averaged a 0.03 score (three one-hundredths of a ratings point) based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic. And while the premium cable channels are not as focused on the same-day ratings, those do act as a leading indicator of audience interest. The original series was never highly rated either, but it had a well-respected three-season run and Showtime decided to give the franchise another shot with the spin-off. The ratings for City of Angels started off low when it premiered in April of this year, and never improved through its ten-episode run (often falling out of the Cable Top 150 shows for the night). I moved it to Bubble status early on, and considered it a long shot to get a second season renewal. Whether fans will make a Call to Action to lobby for another season remains to be seen.
Also cancelled on Friday were Netflix’s The Society and I Am Not Okay With This. More on those at this link.
Penny Dreadful City of Angels takes place in 1930’s Hollywood and follows two detectives investigating a grisly set of murders that are linked to supernatural forces straight our of Mexican folklore. It stars Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Adriana Barraza, and Jessica Garza.
