Cancellation Watch: The Duffer Bros Claim Stranger Things Will Continue Beyond Its Fourth Season

Netflix’s retro sci fi/paranormal series Stranger Things is heading into a fourth season which should start filming soon now that the production shutdowns are lifting. There were rumors that the show would be ending with its fourth year, which appears to be the stretch run for an original on that service. But its creators the Duffer brothers have suggested that more seasons could be on the way. In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, the brothers were asked if the show’s fourth season would be its last and following is their answer:

Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story.

Of course, they can plan for future seasons all they want, but Netflix will make the final decision on how long the show will keep running. As mentioned above, four seasons is about the max that originals on the streaming service last, but I can see them making an exception for Stranger Things. It is currently one of their most popular original series and each season is rolled out as an event (likely drawing new subscribers to the service). So a fifth season (the previous mark that the Duffers indicated they would wrap up the story) or even a sixth is still possible. But the comment by the creators above does not count as an official renewal, and it may be after the fourth season before we get a confirmation on a fifth year or more.  Expect Season 4 to debut on the streaming service mid-2021 if there are no further production delays.

As the 2019-20 season comes to an end, we are still waiting for renewal or cancellation announcements on shows like Netflix’s Altered Carbon, AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere, and Showtimes’s Penny Dreadful City of Angels.
