Ratings Results of Interest

[Updated 8/12/20] On Sunday, AMC’s supernatural drama NOS4A2 slipped a tick 0.10 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 333K total viewers.  I previously reported the numbers for the simulcast on BBC America only which had the show at a 0.04 rating.  But even combined, those numbers are rather low and down from the show’s first-year average.  The ratings are low enough that I question whether they are sustainable for an original series on one of the major cable networks these days.  If the show has significant international financing propping it up, that may help.  But that still may not be enough and this one definitely needs a strong Call to Action from fans on the social networks.  Going forward, I will report the combined AMC/BBC America numbers for this show.

On Syfy on Sunday, Wynonna Earp improved slightly to a 0.07 rating with 348K total viewers.  Those are still pretty low numbers, and a fifth season of this show was already uncertain due to the financial struggles of its production company.  Despite the low ratings, it’s still possible that Syfy could bring this one back for a fifth and final season since it has such a dedicated fanbase.  A Call to Action on the social networks could definitely help its cause.

On Wednesday, Agents of SHIELD held steady at a 0.3 rating with 1.3 million total viewers. That show has its series finale this week. Over on The CW, The 100 slipped after a few weeks of repeats to a 0.1 rating with 471K total viewers. That show is in its final season. On Tuesday on The CW, Stargirl held at a 0.2 rating with 832K total viewers. That show has its season finale this week and has been renewed for a second year.

Troubles Continue for DC Universe

The writing has been on the wall for the DC Universe streaming service ever since HBO Max was announced following the AT&T / Warner Bros. merger.  Launched as a DC Comics focused streamer in 2017, DCU has delivered live-action originals such as Titans and Doom Patrol as well as the animated Harley Quinn. But the latter two shows made the jump to the HBO Max streaming service after its start-up and the live-action Stargirl will move exclusively to The CW for its second season. Swamp Thing was cancelled last year, leaving only Titans and the animated Young Justice as exclusive originals on DCU.

Recent changes to the Facebook pages of Titans and Harley Quinn prompted further speculation that DCU could be on the way out because both have dropped DC Universe from their names.  In addition, massive layoffs were just announced at DC yesterday which impacted the majority of the DC Universe staff.  It seems almost certain at this point that its streaming offerings will be moving to HBO Max, including Titans and Young Justice.  Whether DCU will continue its content focused on comics remains to be seen.  Stay tuned for further developments

Status Updates of Interest

For the status updates on all of the currently airing shows plus those awaiting word on their fate, go to this link.

Warrior Nun (Netflix, Streaming, Status – Renewal Possible): This show ranked as the fourth highest watched title on Netflix the week it was released, so consider its chances of getting a second season renewal pretty good. But don’t expect an extended run because the streamer tends to cap off its shows around the third or fourth season.

Tales from the Loop (Amazon, Season Ended, Status – Renewal Possible): As with any original series on the streaming services, this one has a decent chance of coming back for a second season if the creative team has more stories planned. No renewal announcement has been made yet, but expect to hear word on this one in the next month or two.
