Breaking News: Stargirl Renewed for Second Season at The CW

Coming as no surprise, the new DC superhero series Stargirl has been renewed for a second season and it will become exclusive to The CW. The show is currently releasing episodes weekly on the DC Universe streaming service and those are then broadcast on The CW the next day. But with the show’s second season, it will air only on The CW. The show has performed well for the network and I had previously predicted that it could become a permanent fixture there or move to HBO Max. Whether it will link up with the Arrow-verse at some point remains to seen since the continuity it exists in supposedly went away after the Crisis on Infinite Earth event (though the writers left themselves some wiggle room).

As for the future of the DC Universe streaming service, that becomes more uncertain with this latest announcement. Doom Patrol already jumped to HBO Max (though it is still available on DCU as well), and Stargirl will become exclusive to The CW starting next season. That leaves only Titans and Young Justice at DCU. The latter is returning for a fourth season and that could be its last. Titans has a third season on the way, and it could very well join Doom Patrol on HBO Max. DCU could then focus exclusively on comics, or it could get shut down altogether. But at this point, I would say there is a strong likelihood that streaming originals could be making a move away from that service.

Stargirl follows a teenage girl who discovers that she is the daughter of Starman and has inherited his Cosmic Staff. The former sidekick/partner of the departed hero assists her with learning how to use her powers. It stars Brec Bassinger, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, and Luke Wilson. New episodes currently premiere on DC Universe on Mondays and are then broadcast on The CW on Tuesdays at 8 PM EST.

There are still more renewal and cancellation announcements on the way for shows such as AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere and Freeform’s Siren.
