1. Cyberpunk 2077 Series Edgerunners in the Works

Netflix has placed a ten episode order for the Anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners which is based on the upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077. Hollywood Reporter gives the following description of the series:

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners centers on a a street kid trying to survive in a tech-obsessed city by becoming a mercenary called an edgerunner, aka a cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for a November 19th release and Johnny Depp will be voicing one of the characters. Edgerunners is currently scheduled for a 2022 debut on Netflix.

2. HBO Max Developing Sci Fi Series In Memoriam

HBO Max has a new dystopian sci fi series in the works titled In Memoriam which comes from British playwright Charley Miles and Mr. Robot director Niels Arden Oplev. Deadline Hollywood gives the following description for the project:

The story is set in the near future. Whilst humanity was busy uploading photos to the cloud and digitising every book ever written, the human brain was quietly evolving, and we lost the capacity to store long-term memory. But Britain’s National Health Service developed the cure: a government-issued memory chip. When 17-year-old Somalia finds her mum dead on their living room floor, she makes an unprecedented, and criminal, decision to implant her mother’s memory chip. Somalia’s search for identity sends her spiraling into an underground world of digital militants and authoritarian dispute, until she finds herself at the heart of a conspiracy; one that will unite her mother’s past and the dark origins of this scientific breakthrough.

The streaming service will be considering this one for their 2021 slate of originals.

3. Netflix Extends Lucifer to a Sixth Season

Netflix has renewed its supernatural dramedy Lucifer for a sixth season. That show’s fifth season was previously announced as its last, but then the episode count was extended, followed by series star Tom Ellis entering into negotiations to return for a sixth year. He signed the contracts several weeks ago clearing the way for Netflix to renew the show for one more season. The remaining cast as well as the creative team will also be returning for the sixth season, which will be the show’s last (for now). Lucifer first aired on the FOX broadcast network but was cancelled after its third season. A raucous fan campaigned followed and Netflix stepped in to save the series.  The fourth season debuted in May 2019 on the streaming service and the fifth season has set August 21st as its premiere date.

4. Korean Supernatural Drama Hotel Del Luna to Get English Remake

Skydance Television is working on an English remake of the Korean supernatural / fantasy series Hotel Del Luna. Deadline Hollywood gives the following description for the original series:

It is a fantasy drama that features an elite hotelier who becomes the manager of Hotel Del Luna, a mystical hotel that only caters to spirits at night, after stumbling upon a fateful event.

No network is attached at this point, and it may be 2021 before production gets rolling on this as the entertainment industry slowly works its way out of the shutdowns.

5. Scheduling Notes Y: The Last Man and American Horror Stories Shift to Hulu

The long-delayed Y: The Last Man and the upcoming AHS spin-off series American Horror Stories will be moving from the FX cable network to Hulu. They will stream there on the banner FX on Hulu like Devs which premiered in March of this year. It is uncertain at this point if this is an indication that FX is moving away from scripted programming (both FX and Hulu are owned by Disney). Peacock’s Brave New World, based on the Aldous Huxley novel, has been given a premiere date of July 15th, the same day that the new streaming service will be widely available. The live-action Marvel series Helstrom will be arriving on Hulu in October of this year, but a specific date has not been set. And the fourth season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale has been pushed to a 2021 premiere due to the production delays.

THE SCHED: Premieres for Warrior Nun and JU-ON: Origins

Netflix will be adding two more series to its ever-expanding slate of originals next week. On Thursday the supernatural drama Warrior Nun has its debut with all episodes available for viewing. That one comes from Continuum‘s Simon Barry and is based on Ben Dunn’s comic Warrior Nun Areala. On Friday, the supernatural horror series JU-ON: Origins has its debut with all episodes available to stream. That one acts as a prequel to the horror franchise JU-ON which has produced multiple movies.
