Breaking News: NBC Renews Manifest for 3rd Season

Coming as no surprise, NBC has announced that its missing-plane drama Manifest has been renewed for a third season. I had actually expected the announcement to be made a month ago at the time that the network originally scheduled its upfront presentation when it would have unveiled its schedule for the coming season. But NBC cancelled its upfront due to the pandemic and instead did virtual meetings with advertisers, and it has yet to reveal its full schedule for Fall. The series is a co-production with Warner Bros., so there may have been some negotiations with that studio that prolonged the announcement.  The same-day ratings for Manifest were down some in its second season, but the show has been one of the top performers in delayed-viewing among the broadcast networks. The old-school nets do not pay as much attention to the delayed-viewing stats because their programming is still driven by ad revenue based on the same-day numbers. But in the current Peak TV environment, it’s hard to ignore a top performer like that. An estimated return date for the show has not been announced, but I would expect it to hit the schedule around January 2021 because production in the entertainment industry is only just now starting to ramp back up.

Manifest follows the passengers and crew of a flight that disappeared for five years then mysteriously returns with time not having passed for those aboard. They try to discover the truth of what happened to them while also dealing with foreboding visions that started after their return. It stars Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J. R. Ramirez, and Luna Blaise and is executive produced by Robert Zemeckis.

There are still more renewal and cancellation announcements on the way for shows such as Syfy’s Vagrant Queen and Freeforms’ Siren.
